What Family Caregiver Connection Has Been Doing
FCC Community Partnerships
The Building Resources for Informal Caregivers (BRIC)
Project is a partnership of VON Hamilton-Wentworth, the Family Caregiver Connection (FCC) and other organizations within the region. (The Self-Help Network of Hamilton and District, Glanbrook Home Support Programme Inc., the Multiple Sclerosis Society Hamilton Chapter and McMaster University Office of Gerontological Studies)
The BRIC partners will build on the VON/FCC education with the goal of expanding, developing and sustaining an education and peer support resource for family caregivers More non-professional caregivers in our community will have an opportunity to look at the challenges and rewards of care giving, as well as to learn practical ways to manage the pressing needs. The project will also build public awareness about the issues related to family care giving.
The Hamilton Community Foundation provided funding for the project for a one year period.. Additional funds are being sought to allow BRIC to continue.
Another project that FCC is involved in is The Hamilton-Wentworth Caregiver Respite and Support (CaReS) Project. Again a collaboration of service providers and Caregivers have been funded by The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation to carry out over the next three years a multifaceted program to collect information on care giving and Caregivers in the Hamilton-Wentworth region; to assess potential barriers to identifying and meeting caregiver needs; to test strategies to increase public awareness and knowledge; and finally to summarize leanings from the project in a "how-to" toolkit for use in other communities.
